As more key dates on the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown creep closer, more and more social events are on the horizon.
While this is all terribly exciting, it also means that, after months spent inside away from most of society, many of us are facing up to the fact that we need to relearn how to make normal conversation again.
If you feel out of practice socialising in person, you’re not the only one and, aside from that little old coronavirus, most people have had precious little going on in their personal lives for the last year.
Sure, the ongoing pandemic is a grand unifier, but do you really want that to be the subject of small talk you make in the office? Or down the pub when you’re trying to get reacquainted with mates you haven’t seen in 12 months?
Talking about lockdown is the new talking about the weather – it’s a safe bet, and it’s bound to come up sooner or later, but it’s not exactly a joy to discuss.
If you’d like to leave lockdown in the past the next time you’re out doing something social, here are some conversation starters ranging from small talk to, well, bigger talk.
Non-pandemic-related conversation startersHow are the kids/pets? Working on anything exciting lately? What was the last thing that really made you laugh? Nice tattoo, have you got any more? What’s the last really good book you read? Have you heard from (a connection you have in common that you can gossip about) recently? I’ve completed Netflix – what series I should watch next? What’s the weirdest thing you’d do for £1million? What’s the worst first date you’ve ever been on? What’s your go-to karaoke song? Cooked anything good recently? I’m looking for some inspiration. I’ve been dying to hear what you thought of UK Drag Race/Line of Duty/Cyberpunk/It’s A Sin/US Drag Race/Bridgerton/WandaVision(/any other entertainment phenomenon that came out in the last 12 months). If you were a massive boat, what canal would you wedge yourself in and why? Oh my God, I love your skirt/bracelet, where did you get it? What’s the best dream you ever had? What’s your favourite scary movie? Have you ever seen a ghost? What would you do if you won the lottery? What’s worse: microwaving fish in the office or leaving teabags in the sink? (Note: This is a trick question, both are terrible.) Who do you think would win in a fight: cocaine boars or a cocaine bear? What’s your favourite fact about yourself? If you had to wake up to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Dean, Jess or Logan? Who sparked your sexual awakening? Where were you when you found out about the Glossier code? How do you feel about the fact that racism impacts air quality and endangers life? If you could be reincarnated as anything, what would you be? What’s your favourite conspiracy theory?
