PRESIDENT Donald Trump wants a special counsel appointed to investigate his claims of election fraud and look into the allegations made against his rival’s son, Hunter Biden, reports say.
Trump, 74, is said to be increasingly frustrated with his legal team over their steady stream of losses in trying to overturn the election results as well as with his attorney general Bill Barr for failing to act over claims made against Joe Biden’s son.Donald Trump wants a special counsel appointed to investigate the election and Hunter Biden Hunter revealed earlier this week that he is the subject of a federal investigation into his taxesCredit: AFP Trump is said to have become angered with his attorney general Bill BarrCredit: AP:Associated Press
The current president is said to have voiced his anger with Barr in a meeting Friday after it emerged the AG allegedly knew of a federal investigation into Hunter before the election but failed to make it public, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Donald Trump is also said to have threatened to fire Barr but so far has been dissuaded to do so by his aides.
Due to official regulations, Barr is the only person who could appoint a special counsel to carry out an independent investigation into the issues, but Barr announced earlier this month the Justice Department had found no evidence of the widespread election fraud that Trump and his campaign team claim.
SUPREME COURT DEFEAT
Trump’s team suffered another setback Friday to their hopes of overturning the presidential results when the Supreme Court voted 7-2 to dismiss a case brought on Monday.
The Texan attorney general Ken Paxton had asked the court to intervene and overturn the election in four states that had voted for Democrat Joe Biden.
Justice Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito said they would have heard the case - but that they wouldn’t overturned the election result, effectively making the result 9-0.
The court issued a one-page ruling just after 6.30pm, effectively ending Trump’s legal bid.
“Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections,” the ruling said.
Trump had referred to the case as “the big one” and posted a number of messages about it on his Twitter page.
'THE BIG ONE'
The Supreme Court’s ruling now leaves Trump few options left in his bid to get the election result overturned.
Despite running out of options Trump appears to be in no mood to concede defeat to his presidential rival Joe Biden and his special counsel plan could be Trump’s last throw of the dice.
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is said to have told people about Trump’s plan and desire to act quickly, the WSJ claims.
An unnamed source told the paper officials have discussed the possibility of launching a probe into Hunter’s business activities, fearing Joe Biden would shut down any investigation once he has been inaugurated.
Barr though is said to be unlikely to make such an appointment in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling.
Republican lawmakers have been urging for months for an investigation to be launched into Hunter’s business affairs.
Hunter revealed earlier this week that he is the subject of a federal investigation into his taxes.
The investigation is being handled by the attorney’s office in Delaware.
Hunter is also said to be under investigation by the FBI over alleged money laundering and his ties to China after cops seized his laptop, reports say.
The President-elect's son, 50, revealed yesterday that his "tax affairs" were being investigated - however it is claimed the probe is much more wide-ranging.
Feds in Delaware and Washington were looking into money laundering claims and Biden Jr's foreign dealings, a source told Politico.
And the New York Post reports that the probe involves a laptop owned by Hunter which contains documents detailing his dealings in China and Ukraine.
The FBI is also looking into transactions with foreigners who posed counterintelligence concerns, CNN reports.Trump is clinging onto the hope the election vote can be overturned despite legal setbacksCredit: Reuters Trump is said to want to set up the investigation into Hunter quicklyCredit: Getty Images - Getty
