Our source said: “It is absolutely hellish in the hospital – really grim and worse than it has been.
“We are having to use every ward for Covid patients, with operations cancelled and even the children’s ward closed.
“The staff are using gallows humour, and have nicknamed Bevan ‘Halfway to heaven’ because that is where people are going who are unlikely to survive.
“It is down to this new strain, which is transmitted so easily between people and it is just going around like wildfire. And if anybody is not taking this seriously, they are an idiot.
“One woman came in who faces losing her own family, it is just heart-breaking. Hopefully her sister will survive but it is terrifying that she is only in her 30s.
“And one guy died within a day of being admitted. He was not that old, and his wife wanted to check on him and was met with that awful news. Loads of staff have not yet been vaccinated.

“And doctors and nurses are increasingly seeing their relatives brought it and facing the trauma of worrying about them, while having to treat other patients on their shifts.
“There are still not enough resources and the whole situation is truly terrifying.”
