Seven of the best high street fragrances to try now

2 months ago 10

There are some hidden gems in high street stores.

Fragrance may have once been a part of your daily routine, spritzed on mindlessly before jumping on the train for your morning commute.

But now we’re at home, you may not want ‘waste’ your best and most expensive bottles on a trip to the kitchen.

That doesn’t mean you need to say goodbye to wearing fragrance. There are always high street options, which being cheaper might feel more appropriate for liberal application while in lockdown.

You’d be forgiven for associating labels and high prices with quality, but we assure you this doesn’t always have to be the way when it comes to fragrance.

In fact, there are some high street stores that have created their fragrance offerings with leading perfumers who’ve worked on the pricey brands you know and love (even if your bank account doesn’t) such as Jo Malone and Diptyque.

You just have to know where to look, and while it helps to be a beauty know-it-all, we’ve rounded up some of the best that are currently on the market.

Zara X Jo Malone Tubereuse Noir

Buy for £25.99 from Zara.

The Zara Emotions collection was designed with none other than Jo Malone. It’s so popular, the range now includes candles and bodycare too.

This seductive tuberose scent reminds us of Gucci Bloom and comes in a variety of sizes. The wear-time and silage (the projection of the scent) are strong on this one.

H&M Black Papyrus

Buy it for £19.99 from H&M.

Though unisex, we’d say this leans slightly more on the masculine side (but any gender can wear it, as fragrance is all about preference) due to its woody, spicy and oud notes.

H&M have worked with perfumers on this line such as Olivier Pescheux, a perfumer whose nose is behind a Diptyque scent.

Lush Pansy

Buy it for £20 from Lush.

This unusual green floral scent becomes increasingly floral as it dries down (you’ll spot rosemary in the notes, but we think that fades into the background the longer that passes after the first spritz).

It’s a gentler scent so the silage isn’t too strong, meaning it would suit those who want a softer smell that stays close to the skin.

& Other Stories Riviera Postcard

Buy it for £28 from & Other Stories.

The name of this alone makes us yearn for travel. But while that’s not physically an option, let a scent mentally guide you abroad.

This fruity-sweet scent will suit those looking for something reminiscent of hot summer days.

Beauty Pie Mandarin Leaf, White Cedar and Freesia

Buy it for £18.97 (for members) from Beauty Pie.

This pricey scent becomes pretty affordable if you have a Beauty Pie membership, so granted you’ll need to commit to the brand for a little while to make this one worth it.

Sidonie Lancesseur is the nose behind the fresh and clean fragrance – she’s worked on scents by Chloe, Mugler and Dolce & Gabbana to name but a few.

Lush Lust Solid

Buy it for £10 from Lush.

Lush also produce their perfumes in solid formats for easy on-the-go application.

While that’s not a huge concern right now, we’ve enjoyed wearing Lust – a heady jasmine rose scent – in a solid format, as it knocks back the intensity of the smell for home-wear when compared with the liquid version.

H&M Pear

Buy it for £4.99 from H&M.

The H&M perfume collection, made with leading perfumers, comes in a variety of formats. Pear is part of the eau de toilette family and is only 20ml, making it very low-commitment. These also work well when layered with other scents.

It smells exactly as a ripe, juicy pear would – it’s very much a literal fragrance in that the name perfectly describes the scent.
