The Umbrella Academy’s Robert Sheehan and Tom Hopper team up for the podcast you need to be paying more attention to

The Umbrella Academy’s Tom Hopper and Robert Sheehan have teamed up with hospitality guru Byron Knight for their very own podcast, The Earth Locker – and honestly, if you haven’t heard of it yet, you’ve been missing out.

The coronavirus pandemic has almost been split into different chunks depending on what’s been circulating the media.

Whether it be Tiger King at the start of lockdown, The Mandalorian (for those in the UK), as well as Selling Sunset, the Great British Bake Off and Strictly Come Dancing, it feels as though we’ve completed Netflix, Amazon Prime and Now TV – if that’s even possible.

So, it’s time to move into another phase of this most bizarre year, and Metro.co.uk is gifting you with some new viewing ideas, because while The Earth Locker is a podcast, it’s also a series on YouTube, and it’s definitely perfect viewing after the past six months of reflection.

While there is no real theme as a whole, the main aim of each episode is to basically turn their listeners into better Earthlings, whether that be spiritually, through diet, or even by sharing inspirational anecdotes from the likes of actors David Castañeda and Ron Perlman, as well as writer Emma Dabiri.

It’s a place to expand your knowledge of the ever changing world and, as the team puts it, ‘somewhere that unlocks all of Earth’s secret experts and amazing life stories to the masses so they in turn can learn to be healthier in the future.’

We were lucky enough to catch up with Byron, Rob and Tom where they spoke about their new venture over a pretty wholesome video call.

‘We want people to ultimately have a laugh while watching it,’ Tom beamed down the lens as he propped himself up next to a window – making sure the lighting was on point.

The actor is currently quarantining in Toronto, Canada, ahead of filming for the new Resident Evil movie, where he’ll play Dr. Albert Wesker.

Explaining how he hopes people come away with new information, the 35-year-old pressed: ‘With every episode I can honestly say I have learned something new, it’s amazing for us.’

You only need to listen to the first five minutes of their conversation with the doctor and self-help expert Deepak Chopra to have your minds blown.

A huge part of their podcast series focuses on both food and healthy living, and how what you put into your body can actually help your state of mind.

This is where Byron was brought into the mix, as he specialises in hospitality – owning the acclaimed Off Broadway bar in Hackney, London.

‘I think you really took the diet side to another level because of your relationship with Tom,’ he told Rob when referring to Tom’s diet, which the star previously explained to MensHealth emphasises meat, vegetables, eggs and salads, while avoiding sugar.

‘They had called me to ask about what’s going on with health, food and eating in the UK,’ Byron, who was wearing his statement dungarees, continued. ‘And it just kind of grew into a bigger conversation. And then I thought, “well, market research is a podcast, because we can learn as we go.”’

Rob agreed while sat in his London abode with an impressive wall mural looming in from the corner of the screen.

The 32-year-old said: ‘It evolved from us wanting to legitimise ourselves to some degree going into hospitality and dining.

‘We can build the brand eventually, as The Earth Locker, and then that could continue to evolve. We did 23 / 24 episodes for our first source of instalment, and we just had so much crack and so much fun doing it.’

The boys started working on the show in December last year, however, when it came to filming, coronavirus struck, forcing them to adapt to the new normal.

‘That’s why a lot of the episodes you’ll see me on a TV screen, because I was up to Leicestershire with my family,’ Tom explained. ‘And it was a time where everything was ambiguous about who was allowed and how many people were allowed in a building.’

It’s still ambiguous now! But, Rob stated how they soldiered on until they could finally reunite in the studio (aka Rob’s house), adding: ‘There was a great sense of relief and elation I think when we were the three of us back in in the same room.’

Tom noted: ‘Yeah, it was brilliant. That’s when the magic really flew for us and when we realised how good this show could be, you know, the potential of it when all three of us are in the room together.’

Now that they’re back in the studio, which they described as a ‘rustic This Morning’ setup (yes, Holly and Phil – you have some competition coming your way), they’re hoping to bring in guests when it is safe to do so.

And they’re already eying up the likes of boxer Conor McGregor, sustainable clothing company Rapanui, Jamaican spiritual teacher Mooji and their fellow Umbrella Academy star Aidan Gallagher to take the hot seat.

‘We want interesting people that are obviously a good conversation,’ Tom said.

‘I think what’s great about the podcast is we just have open conversations. There’s no real structure to it. It’s just good conversation, and wherever the conversation goes, it goes.’

He added: ‘The kind of people we want on are people who are inspirational in oneself, and are wanting to be better humans so then they are inspirational to other people because of the journey that they’re on.’

While some of the topics discussed on the show may be deemed political, Byron argued: ‘I would not call anything we do political. I know that seems a weird statement. Because I don’t personally feel like human rights and equality is a political issue, it’s almost a by-product of this inequality that is societal and if you want to be good Earthlings, that’s kind of our approach to it.’

And of course, we all want to be good Earthlings especially after this year – which has forced many of us to put our priorities in place and finally realise what’s important in life.

‘It has enriched me as a human being that’s the God’s honest truth,’ Rob said of The Earth Locker, and we can’t say it hasn’t enriched us too.

The Earth Locker is available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
