TOWER Bridge was on lockdown this morning after a person climbed up the famous monument.

Police stopped traffic in both directions as cops attempted to talk with the person on the structure.

A City of London Police spokesman said the bridge had been closed "while we deal with a person who has climbed the structure."

A photo shared online shows the person standing on the outer part of the bridge, having climbed up from the pavement.

A police officer appears to be approaching the person, who could be seen holding onto the landmark.

It is thought they began to climb up the structure just before 11.30am.

The bridge was later reopened at around 12.30pm, with the force thanking Londoners for their patience during the closure.

The last time the bridge was closed was in August when a fault kept it out of action for 24 hours.

It had failed to close when a ship passed through underneath, with engineers rushing to fix it.
