Biden made the comments over the weekend after White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said the US is “not going to control the pandemic.”
The former vice president said: “White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows stunningly admitted this morning that the administration has given up on even trying to control this pandemic, that they’ve given up on their basic duty to protect the American people."
“This wasn’t a slip by Meadows, it was a candid acknowledgment of what President Trump’s strategy has clearly been from the beginning of this crisis: to wave the white flag of defeat and hope that by ignoring it, the virus would simply go away.
“It hasn’t, and it won’t," Biden said, adding that it was “sadly no surprise” the coronavirus continues to “rage unchecked across the country and even in the White House itself.”
In response, Trump said that Biden was the one waving a flag of surrender on his own life.
“This guy doesn't leave his basement. He is a-- he's a pathetic candidate, I will tell you that," the president told reporters.
During his rally in Allentown -- one of three events to be held in Pennsylvania on Monday -- Trump mocked Biden, claiming he was at "50 percent mental capacity."
