The Masked Singer has returned with a new line-up of characters that have the nation guessing: Who’s behind the mask?
The launch episode, which aired on Boxing Day, saw Robin go head to head against Alien, Swan, Sausage, Dragon and Badger in the first round.
Alien landed in the bottom three with Swan and Badger with the panellists choosing Alien to be eliminated – and behind the mask was singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Since then Seahorse has been revealed to be Spice Girl Mel B, Love Actually star Martine McCutcheon was revealed to be inside Swan’s costume and Glenn Hoddle was unveiled as Grandfather Clock.
However, Robin – who remains in the competition – continues to perplex viewers, many of whom thought after his first performance he might be JLS singer Aston Merrygold.
Let’s look into the clues and theories that could point to Aston being behind the mask.
What clues have been given about Robin?
We first met Robin when they gave us a stunning performance of Don’t Stop The Feeling by Justin Timberlake.Football has been a big part of their life They’ve represented England and played alongside sporting legends ‘My real name is out of this world’ (said as a truth or lie) “This robin’s habitat is more tropical than you think’ (said as a truth or lie) ‘I started performing by doing impressions’ (said as a truth or lie)
During the fifth week of the competition, Robin performed the very aptly named Rockin’ Robin, originally recorded by Bobby Day and later Michael Jackson.
He also gave some more clues about his identity, including…The judges need the ‘luck of the Irish’ to guess who he is. While robins have wings, they don’t tend to ‘stray far’, preferring to remain sedentary. Robin was shown flipping a pancake, while also saying that they prefer to focus on the things he’s good at to ‘bring the flavour’. The performer states that they ‘don’t want to waste any time not doing things I love.’ To finish off, Robin said that the ‘simple things in life have sweetness’, before eating a biscuit.
So, which celebs could Robin be?
There are a lot of clues pointing towards JLS singer Aston.
The Robin outfit could be a nod to the singer’s early days in showbiz – in 2002 he competed on Stars In Your Eyes as Michael Jackson, where he sang his early classic Rockin’ Robin.
Robin added fuel to the fire at the end of their performance, when they hinted to the judges they were ‘flying without wings’.
Flying Without Wings is the name of the Westlife hit JLS sang with the Irish group on The X Factor in 2008.
Meanwhile, when he was in secondary school, Aston played football on behalf of England in the European Youth Games.
JLS star Aston also began his career by doing impressions, singing as Michael Jackson in an adorable childhood performance on Stars In Their Eyes.
Some get the vibe of cheeky chappy Olly from the Robin.
It’s no secret that Olly loves his football, and only gave up his career in the sport when he suffered an injury.
Mo Gilligan guessed Bruno after the Robin’s clue about his name being ‘out of this world’ (although this was said as part of two truths and a lie).
Robin is also clearly a spectacular singer, and Bruno wrote the song Wavin’ Flag for K’naan, which became the anthem for the 2010 World Cup.
Robin is still in the competition, so until they are unmasked we will have to keep guessing!
Last year, Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts won The Masked Singer as Queen Bee.
The Masked Singer continues Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
