Will sex hurt the first time?

Becoming sexually active for the first time can be pretty intimidating.

Aside from grappling with a new and significant type of intimacy for the very first time, there’s also a lot of misinformation out there about sex.

One oft-repeated ‘fact’ about sex is that it always hurts the first time.

Is everyone’s first time really painful? Is anal sex agony? Is vaginal sex any better? Here’s what you need to know…

Will having sex for the first time be painful?

The answer isn’t as simple as yes or no – if you’ve got a vagina, sex for the first time can be painful, but it isn’t that way for everyone.

You might also bleed a little, but again, it’s not the same for everyone.

Pain and bleeding during your first time can be the result of breaking your hymen, which the NHS describes as ‘a small, thin piece of skin that can either partially or totally cover the entrance to your vagina.’

It’s possible to break your hymen without doing anything remotely sexual – anything from putting a tampon in to riding a bike can break one, and plenty of people don’t even notice when theirs stretches and/or breaks.

If you’re having sex by penetrating someone else with your penis, that shouldn’t be painful for you.

If you’re worried about hurting your partner, foreplay, lube and being gentle can help – them being nervous and/or unlubricated will likely make sex less comfortable for them regardless of whether it’s their first time or not.

It’s also worth noting that feeling a little bit of excited nerves is perfectly natural during sex, especially for the first time, but if you’re seriously scared then it’s probably best to wait and talk to your partner and/or GP about how you feel.

As for anal sex, that can also be painful and result in bleeding, but using lube can help.

You might also first try foreplay that involves penetration with something smaller than a penis, like a finger or butt plug.
